How Our Technology Works

Advanced clay-based adsorbents for low-energy CO₂ capture and biogas upgrading

CarbSorbTec uses engineered clay-based adsorbents to selectively capture CO₂ from biogas. Our pelletized sorbents combine high adsorption performance with efficient regeneration, enabling the production of high-purity biomethane while recovering a concentrated biogenic CO₂ stream.

At the heart of the technology is a unique adsorbent derived from abundant natural minerals. Through advanced materials engineering, we tailor the clay's nano-layered structure to preferentially adsorb CO₂ while allowing methane (CH₄) to pass through. Raw biogas is fed into adsorption columns packed with these engineered pellets, where CO₂ is captured through a reversible physisorption mechanism. The adsorbent is then regenerated and reused in a continuous adsorption-regeneration cycle, ensuring reliable and efficient operation. Unlike conventional upgrading technologies that rely on chemical solvents, high temperatures, or energy-intensive regeneration, CarbSorbTec operates close to ambient conditions and uses pressure changes alone to drive the separation process. This enables a simpler, safer, and more sustainable solution with lower energy consumption, reduced operating costs, and a smaller environmental footprint.

Engineering and Process Control Across Multiple Scales

CarbSorbTec's technology platform spans the entire value chain, from molecular sorbent design and scalable pellet manufacturing to pilot-scale biogas upgrading and modular processing systems. By combining advanced clay-based materials with optimized adsorption processes, we enable highly selective CO₂ capture and efficient renewable gas production. Our multidisciplinary approach integrates materials science, process engineering, and system design to deliver solutions that are efficient, scalable, and economically attractive. The result is a new generation of carbon capture and gas treatment technologies that reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and support the transition to a low-carbon and circular economy.

About CarbSorbTec: Carbon Capture & Resource Recovery Solutions

We develop sustainable clay-based carbon capture technologies that transform emissions into valuable resources while supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Here are some of the key advantages that set CarbSorbTec apart.

High CO₂/CH₄ Selectivity

  • Patented clay sorbents selectively capture CO₂ while minimizing methane losses.
  • Up to ~30× higher affinity for CO₂ than CH₄, enabling efficient biomethane upgrading.
  • High CO₂ adsorption capacity.

Low Energy Consumption

Low-pressure (near-ambient) operation and energy-efficient regeneration reduce energy demand. No heating is required for sorbent regeneration, lowering both CAPEX and OPEX.

High-Purity Biomethane & Bio-CO₂

Produces valuable product streams, including grid-quality biomethane and high-purity biogenic CO₂, maximizing resource recovery.

Modular & Scalable Design

Compact, modular design enables cost-effective deployment and straightforward scale-up. Flexible PSA architecture is suitable for applications ranging from small farms and wastewater plants to large industrial biogas facilities.

Natural & Sustainable Materials

Made from abundant mineral clay, our sorbents are low-cost, reusable, and free of toxic chemicals. They provide a sustainable alternative to conventional sorbent materials.

Waste-Free Operation

No solvents, toxic by-products, or secondary waste streams, enabling clean, safe, and simple operation.

Science-Backed, Industry-Proven

Patent-protected technology validated through peer-reviewed research and successfully demonstrated from laboratory studies to continuous pilot-scale operation (TRL 5-6).

Robust & Durable

Long-lived sorbents maintain stable performance with minimal degradation over repeated adsorption-regeneration cycles.

Molecular-Level Selectivity

CarbSorbTec's clay-based sorbents represent a step change in carbon capture and biogas upgrading. Within the layered clay structure, exchanged cations create preferential adsorption sites that selectively attract and retain CO₂ molecules while allowing methane to pass through with minimal interaction.

During operation, CO₂ is captured within the clay layers and subsequently released during regeneration, enabling repeated use with high selectivity, low energy consumption, and minimal sorbent degradation.

Unlike conventional technologies such as amines, membranes, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), our approach combines high CO₂ selectivity with low regeneration energy and abundant natural materials. The process operates without high-pressure compression, heat-intensive regeneration, or waste-generating streams, providing a simpler, more sustainable, and cost-effective solution for carbon capture and biogas upgrading.

Built to Perform. Built to Last.

Our sorbents are produced from abundant natural clay and manufactured using a water-based process, without toxic solvents, hazardous chemicals, or complex processing steps. The material can be shaped into robust, recyclable pellets as well as beads, monoliths, sheets, and other custom geometries, enabling scalable deployment across a wide range of applications.

Unlike many conventional sorbents that gradually lose capacity during repeated adsorption-regeneration cycles, our clay-based materials maintain their structural integrity and separation performance over extended operation. Their excellent mechanical stability supports reliable performance under real-world conditions, including start-stop operation, load fluctuations, and integration with intermittent renewable energy sources.

Combining a natural mineral composition, high CO₂ adsorption capacity, and low-energy regeneration, CarbSorbTec's sorbents provide a sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective solution for biogas upgrading, carbon capture, and gas separation. Designed for long service life and minimal degradation, they deliver consistent performance over hundreds of operating cycles.
